Creado por Wes Craven y ha sido interpretado por Robert Englund en todas las películas hasta el 2003, también en una serie de televisión, posteriormente por Jackie Earle Haley en 2010.

Su apariencia física es muy característica: un rostro desfigurado, un sombrero ajado, un jersey de rayas verdes y rojas y un guante de cuchillas que él mismo ha elaborado. Suele tener un grotesco sentido del humor. Su aparición suele ir acompañada de un inquietante cántico que emiten unas niñas mientras saltan la cuerda.
